Taking care of your classic car during the summer

14 May 2021

Summer is a wonderful time of year, and as well as using this time (and the improved weather conditions) to get back outdoors, it’s the perfect time to hit the open road in your classic car. Whether you’re simply cruising around your local area, attending a classic car show, or taking your pride and joy for a run out a little further afield, taking care of it correctly is the key to enjoying it not just this summer but during many summers to come.

As specialists in classic car storage, we have years of experience taking care of traditional and modern classic vehicles. Here we share our advice for taking care of your classic car during the summer.

Make tyre checks a priority

As the component between you and the road, your tyres are no doubt a vital part of your classic car. Despite this, they are often neglected by classic car owners.

Put the safety of you and your passengers, and the health of your classic car first by prioritising tyre checks this summer. Check and top up the tyre pressure, and make sure your tyre tread is above the minimum legal depth to guarantee carefree, safe driving all summer long.

Check and change your oil

As summer is prime cruising season for many classic car owners, you’re certain to be clocking up some miles. Driving your classic vehicle more frequently however means you have to keep a close eye on your oil levels. As well as topping up the oil, consider changing your oil and oil filter.

Oil changes in particular are essential in classic cars. They ensure your vehicle can successfully lubricate all moving engine parts (this also improves your vehicle’s mileage) as well as cool engine components.

Survey your belts and hoses

If your classic car has been exposed to adverse weather conditions during the colder months, your belts and hoses may be damaged. Cracked belts and leaking hoses don’t go hand-in-hand with long road trips. Be sure to check these components and get them repaired before you venture off.

Install new windscreen wipers

Unfortunately, the great British weather is as unpredictable as ever during summer. Make sure those summer showers don’t catch you out by checking the condition of your windscreen wipers and replacing if necessary.

Consider storing your vehicle

Keeping your classic car in optimum condition relies on the right environment. When your classic car isn’t in use over the summer months, be sure to keep it in storage. We offer a number of cost effective vehicle storage packages, as well as secure, climate controlled units that make the perfect home away from home.
