Keeping your SORN vehicle safe

29 May 2019

Once you have declared your vehicle out-of-action with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN), you may be wondering how to keep it safe.

Getting a SORN is completely free and ensures that you can save money on car insurance and road tax, while still conforming to legal requirements.

Here are a few tips for keeping your SORN vehicle safe.

1. Outdoor vehicle cover

No matter how long your vehicle will be registered for as SORN, an outdoor vehicle cover may be the perfect option to help keep your vehicle safe for the duration it is off-road.

Not only will the paintwork be safe from the elements, tree sap and bird mess, it will also prevent unwanted moss and green algae growth.

2. Regular maintenance

If you have made a SORN but plan on using your vehicle again, then you may need to conduct regular maintenance work on your vehicle to ensure it remains in working order while off-road.

Leaving a vehicle without running the engine regularly can impact its well-being. Likewise, leaving cars outside for long durations without regular ventilation can cause mould and other internal damage, so you may need to clean the inside of your vehicle to prevent damage that’s difficult to rectify.

3. Keep out of sight from bypassers

Keeping your SORN vehicle out of sight from bypassers is an important way to keep it safe. If thieves detect that your car does not have any registered tax or insurance, it might be a compelling reason to steal your car.

While we don’t need to display tax discs on our vehicles anymore, keeping your vehicle in the sight of bypassers when it’s not in regular use might attract unwanted attention.

4. Roadside, driveway or garage storage

A great way to keep your SORN vehicle safe is to choose a suitable place for it to be stored while it’s not in use.

You may think you have the solution at home, but storing your SORN vehicle on a driveway rather than a garage may increase your chances of theft or damage from bypassers. If your own garage is not an option, carefully consider renting storage space somewhere out of sight when registering your vehicle as SORN.

5. Other car storage options

Even if you do own a garage, it still may not be the most suitable place to keep your SORN vehicle. Depending on the size of your garage and other storage requirements at home, you may need to consider professional car storage options for optimum safety.
