How might electric vehicles impact using your classic car

13 July 2021

The 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars may be great for the environment, but it is a worrying prospect for many vehicle owners, especially considering the high cost of electric vehicles.

For owners of classic cars in particular, there’s countless questions to be answered about how the increase in electric vehicle uptake might affect the driving experience as well as the maintenance of their treasured classic car models.

As experts in the secure storage of prestige and classic cars, we’ve heard some of these concerns first hand. Here we answer the questions on every classic car owner’s lips…

Will roads be full of electric cars?

The 2030 ban represents a drastic change to the motor industry, but it is important to state that what you see on UK roads won’t change overnight.

Electric car uptake may be increasing steadily, but it will have to increase dramatically before the roads are full of electric vehicles. It’s estimated that it’ll take decades for the full effect of the 2030 ban to alter the image of UK roads.

Will I be able to fill up my classic car as usual?

Filling stations will still be in business long after the 2030 ban. Whilst they will have to adapt to cater to the growing number of electric vehicles on our roads – increasing the presence of charging points or hydrogen pumps on their forecourts – they will still have to sell petrol and diesel to owners of used vehicles.

Will it cost more to run my classic car?

There are already financial incentives to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles over petrol or diesel varieties. It’s expected that these incentives will continue to increase the uptake of electric cars.

It’s also predicted that the government will make running a petrol or diesel vehicle, like a classic car, less convenient and more expensive by increasing fuel prices, car tax and emissions charges.

Will the value of my classic car be affected?

Many experts believe that the value of existing petrol or diesel cars (including classic vehicles) will increase due to the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. It is important to state that the sale of used cars will not be affected by the 2030 ban, just new vehicles.

Preserving the rights of car enthusiasts is a focus for many industry bodies, including the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC). They are campaigning to ensure that classic car owners can continue to use their vehicles and maintain them even as the popularity of electric vehicles increases.
