The difference between your garage and a secure car storage facility

If you have a garage at home, it’s clearly the obvious place to store your car, right?

Or is it?

If your car is a daily driver, and therefore regularly in use, keeping it safely stored in your garage when not in use makes perfect sense; it’s the sign of a careful owner. But if your car is a track day weapon, timeless classic or weekend play thing that’s best suited to certain times of the year, it needs a bit more care.

Such cars benefit significantly from being placed in professional car storage facilities. Despite this, many owner make the mistake of using their garage for such purposes, and the results are often less than desirable.

Here’s the key difference between your garage and a specialist car storage facility.

Space

Unless you’re blessed with a huge garage, chances are it’s probably a fairly small space in which to store your beloved motor.

Besides your car, you’ve probably got bikes, tools, that old washing machine, beer fridge and the boxes from the house move that you’ll never get around to sorting.

In a car storage facility, every square inch of space is devoted to cars and nothing more.

Peace of mind

Go on - admit it; you worry about your car resting in that garage. Despite your efforts to add numerous bolts and CCTV, you know it wouldn’t take much for an experienced criminal to get in there and take it from you.

With professional car storage, you’ll have no such worry. Providing they have round-the-clock security, your car really couldn’t be any safer.

The cost

But, surely - storing your car in your own garage is far more cost effective than paying someone to do it for you?

On the face of it, absolutely! But that’s before you consider what might happen to your car while it’s in storage in your garage. Changes in temperature can damage the paint and bodywork, moisture and humidity can play havoc with internals and cause corrosion, and what if that hastily piled stack of tools ends up falling onto the bonnet?

Self car storage is inherently risky, and therefore likely to be more costly in the long run than leaving it to the professionals.

Purpose-built

Yes, once again, your garage was purpose-built for storing a car, but it’s really nothing more than an oblong room.

This is because garages are designed to be used for anything the home owner may wish to store. A secure car storage facility, on the other hand, will have been purpose-built to house cars and therefore every element of the build will have taken that into consideration.

Wrapping up

Skimping on car storage when your vehicle is so precious to you isn’t sensible. As we note above, although it might seem more cost effective initially, in the long run, you’ll end up spending more on fixes and maintenance.

Think of car storage as just an extension of the servicing, detailing and MOTs your car is put through. Granted, it’s not the most obvious expense at first, but once you experience it, you’ll realise how important professional car storage is.
