Being the proud owner of a classic vehicle comes with a long list of responsibilities, and this extends beyond proper storage and maintenance. Here’s what you need to know about your MOT and tax obligations as a classic car owner…
In the UK, not every vehicle has to undergo a once yearly MOT. While it’s a vital part of keeping a modern vehicle legally compliant and roadworthy, your historic vehicle may not need to get an MOT. If your classic car was built or first registered 40 years ago or more, and has undergone no substantial changes during the last 30 years, it will not need an MOT by law.
The term ‘substantial change’ has caused some confusion in the world of classics. Substantial changes include but are not limited to the replacement of the chassis, body, axles or engine.
Substantial changes essentially alter how the vehicle works. Please note, this doesn’t include modifications made to preserve the vehicle, enhance efficiency, improve safety or boost environmental performance. For clarification, we recommend consulting with a historic vehicle expert.
As a classic vehicle owner, you may also be exempt from vehicle tax. If your historic vehicle was built before 1st January 1985, you will not have to pay vehicle tax from 1st April 2025. This includes cars, vans, motorcycles, tricycles, HGVs, buses, and specialist vehicles like agricultural machines and steam-powered setups.
You must however apply for a vehicle tax exemption. This can be done at your local Post Office. Simply, take along your log book or V5C, your vehicle tax reminder letter, and your current MOT certificate (if applicable) or evidence that you are MOT exempt.
Yes, if your classic vehicle is used for monetary gain (as a taxi for example) or commercially, you will still be required to pay vehicle tax, even if it was built before 1st January 1985 or first registered before 8th January 1985.
