Car theft – what can you do to help prevent it?

6 June 2025

Car theft remains a very big problem indeed within the UK, with thieves using increasingly sophisticated techniques to take off with our beloved vehicles. According to the latest government statistics, car theft has increased by more than a third nationwide. And it’s not just luxury and prestige vehicles that are on the average car thief’s hit list.

The Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Nissan Juke and Vauxhall Corsa were the most stolen cars in the UK last year, which means no one is safe. Whatever vehicle you’re looking to safeguard from theft, you’ll want to use the following tips to minimise the risk.

Get the basics right

When protecting your vehicle from car theft, don’t forget the basics. Make sure you lock your car – even when getting fuel or temporarily parked outside your home. This includes securing any windows and the sunroof. Your keys should also be kept in a safe place. Never leave your keys on display or near your front door.

Be on your guard

If you are currently selling your vehicle, be careful with potential purchasers. They may not be who they say they are. There have been many instances where thieves posing as would-be buyers clone car keys and come back for your vehicle later. When dealing with potential buyers, don’t let those keys out of your sight!

A word about keyless vehicles

With keyless entry increasingly common, there are yet more safety concerns. Keyless entry can actually leave your car particularly vulnerable, with a keyless vehicle stolen every five minutes in the UK. Thieves are using the latest black market tech to undertake relay theft, which essentially tricks your car into thinking the key fob is close by so it opens and the ignition starts as normal.

Prevent relay theft by storing your car key and any spares well away from your vehicle. Store them in a signal blocking pouch for full protection. Second hand vehicle keys should be reprogrammed before use for security reasons too.

Up the ante with aftermarket devices

There are a range of anti-theft products available for use in your car, this includes visible deterrents like wheel, handbrake and pedal locks. Aftermarket immobilisers can also be fitted to increase vehicle security further.
